Evaluation question 1
Evaluation question 7 pp from 9ggardner
Camera
To create a unique feel to our media, We use unique camera angles that created a different feel to our opening scene.
Examples:
1) We chose this camera angle and effect for the ending of our opening scene to make the bodies seem less important in this frame, focusing on our branch and not the body gave an unusual effect to the end of our opening sequence. This helps create a different feel and emotions in the end, making the killing of someone seem more unusual to the audience because they do not know the truth of why this person was killed.
2) This camera angle and effect (blurring in the corners) helped create a some what different feel to the opening of our media project, This some what strange camera angle showed you what was going on in the background, whilst focusing on the interior of the car this create a strange feel in this clip, that spray from the vehicle going through the water created a unique transitional feature of this clip, which worked well.
3) This camera angle made the person in the chair look big and have power in the frame, but when you find he is being executed this changes the power and hierarchy in this scene.
Sound
The music was probably the most important part, it created tension during critical part of the opening scene. The problem was finding music that was non-copyrighted.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene helps create the sense of a gangster genre throughout the opening scene, The Guns help create a sense of power and fear too other characters in the opening scenes. The gangster boss holding the Gun at the end of the opening sequence shows he has the most power compared to other characters in that scene, this helps Convery a more powerful position in the hierarchy of the group compared to the bodyguards. Without mise-en-scène the character would not have conveyed the right emotions and feelings to the audience.

The second song was used for the main soundtrack to created a specific atmosphere. This was perfect music for opening, creating a dramatic atmosphere for the audience . This also was non- copyrighted music.

The land Rover shows that the gangster has money and that he is of a higher class because he is able to afford a expensive car. These connotations Betray the gangster feel that we wanted in are opening scene.

Editing (iMovie)
To edit are film opening we used iMovie, which is a editing software design by apple. The software was very user friendly, but a time had the capability to achieve same complexed task.
Below are pacific editing points :
1) When editing we used different transition effect to simulate a variety of different responses that effected the way the audience perceived the change in clip. An example of this is flashback. To represent a flashback we faded to a white background and then into the clip . This helped determined a change in time and place. An example of this is shown below.
2) When editing a flashback we added an overlay to the clip, This helped the audience to identify that they were in a flashback or not. An comparison of the change in overlay is shown below.
3) When editing we used music to build up tension creating a more dramatical effect for the audience. Playing the opening without music really detracts from the correct feel that the opening it trying to portray. An example with and without music will be embedded below.
4) When editing the gun shot we had to use per-keyed footage to add a special effect on to the original clip. In IMovie we used picture on picture mode which aloud me as the editor the add two clip into one frame. Below I will insert the timeline. This will show how i edited the clip.

Opening Film Research
Layer Cake
Frame Breakdown
Shot 1: This is the establishing shot to the movie and is a medium shot of a van. The clip starts in with a black background which slowly faded out and than the van blows up. The music is Playing in the background is layer cakes own soundtrack that they created. The shot doesn't give away much but the clever use of camera shot, zooming out sets the scene for which the actors later use as a shootout. The uses of the Daniel Craig's monologue adds to the feel of opening. Makes it unique opening compared to the other films i have researched.
Shot 2: In this shot one of the men is shooting at people after the van is blown up. In this shot the use of slow motion feels turn a very hectic shooting much clam, This is strange in a action thriller . This could be a indication of what the movie is like, guns, shooting people, therefore establishes the genre.
Shot 3: This shot is a medium/long shot as it shows the shoulder and above of the guy and the two girls on his side. I chose this shot as its quite elaborate as it shows the type of mise-en-scene and gives us a clue of what the movie might be about.
Shot 4: This shot is of the people in the prison, the type of shot is very unique as its not a over the shoulder, but it is at shoulder hight. The camera moves across the room panning across, this is a different shot type that is hard to do.
Shot 5: Shot five shows the drugs in the shop, and what it would be like if they were commercially sold. The shot type is also a panning shot as it follows Daniel Craig walking and talking through the shop about how they are in the wrong business. When Daniel Craig is walking the items in the background are changing , this is Daniel Craig dream of changing times.

Rough Cut of Original Footage
Draft Sample :
This is a draft of the original footage that we took for our media project. As you can see there are many problems with the filming in these clips. Due to bad organisation we didn't have a Tricord to stabilise the clips. This is why most of the clips are shaky. As well I personally feel that the shots we took were too long. Losing the audiences attention.
Throughout the filming we didn't pay attention to positions of characters in the scene therefore the continuity wasn't correct for these scenes. Below is a example of characters changing position.

You can clearly see that Charlie is driving (left photo), but in the next shot Zackey (right photo) is getting out of the drivers seat door. This is a continuity error. This is one of the many reason we were forced to re-film.
On the first day of film, we decided to start filming around 4 o'clock. This meant that the lights conditions were going to fade before we would have had finish filming. This meant that the continuity of the clips wouldn't flow correctly. This meant that we have to change part of the film to accommodate these changes. The below images show the different light levels throughout the filming process.
Thank You
for reading this post.
We have just re-filmed and are now editing the final version.

Quantum of solace Opening Title Sequence :
Camera :
- In the opening scene mostly all of the shots are close-up of James Bond's Aston Martin, the chase car and weapons. This creates a action feel to the opening.
- In the opening you never see the whole car , only extreme Close-up shots of different parts of the car. You never see the drive but as he is driving a Aston Martin you presume the driver is James Bond.
- Shot 2 is a great shot. This is the first time you see what he is running from. This is a great uses of the car.
- The reflection shows the position of the car that is shooting . The muzzle flash can be scene in this shoot. This is a different way of shooting this scene. compared to older bond films.
Editing :
- The editing is very fast, This creates a high pace feel . The use of the surrounding area adds to the opening scene because you don't know the background story. Therefore you are trying to pice together each clip.
Mise-en-scene :
- As the gun is introduced the mood changes. This shows how powerful props can be.
Sound :
- Through-out the opening the music is very sinister and dramatic. But the soundtrack dies down and you only hear the diegetic sound from the cars. This helps you concentrate on the action in the scene.

Camera :
- The camera used in the opening is a CCTV camera. This gives the impression that something bad is going to happen.
- The camera pans too the left to reveal a bank of CCTV monitors. These camera track the movement of the jews in the shot.
Editing :
- The editing is clean, It feels like you are in the room catching the CCTV monitors and not watching a film. This is a great opening effect.
- i like how when a new character enter the shot the camera pauses and tell you some information about the character. This effect blurs out the rest of the frame as well.
- During the end of the opening clip the camera tracks the movement of money from frame to frame.
Mise-en-scene :
- The uses of props help disguise the character so that they are able to blend in.
Sound :
- The music is very subdued at the beginning, But as the action starts the music changes in pace.
