Filming Opening Research

Catch Me if You Can Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • Due to animation being used in this opening. This creates a very 2 dimensional feel this means  that you get no perception of depth in the frame. This benefits the clip because you can't always keep track of the movement of the Frank Abagnale Jr. which is the main character in the film .
  • There is know variety of shot therefore making the clip there simple, this keeps the audiences attention on the action that is taking place in frame. The movement of Frank Abagnale Jr. which is the main character may often confusion the audience. I think this is trying to be like a game for the audience foreshadowing events later on when Carl Hanratty (the cop) is trying to track down  Frank Abagnale Jr..

Editing :

  • The editing in the opening clip is very clean. This creates a very smart and profession feel just like the characters from the film.
  • When the frame is change the music is linked in to the action in the frame.
  • In the editing there are many frames where only small parts of the frame move. The image below show Frank Abagnale Jr. change careers. This is a brilliant way of portraying this change.

 Mise-en-scene :

  • The props throughout the opening help to show what Job Frank Abagnale Jr. is try to Impersonate.
  • The colour chosen in the opening link back to the time period the film was set in.
  • The opening clip uses bright background colours to contrast the black animated characters.
  • From the picture below you can clear see without the stethoscope you wouldn't be able to get the correct mean from this frame . This is why miss-en-scene is so important in this opening.

Sound :

  • The sound links to the action in the frame. Getting louder when important action is being shown.

Research Feedback

Genre of the clip?

  • The movie is a Biography,Comedy,Crime,Drama hybrid.

How are the audience being drawn in?

  • The audience are drawn in by the suspense not knowing what going to happen next. The music helps due to crescendos marking the an important bit on action.

What is the tone/mood of the clip?

  • The tone and mood of the clip is very up beat and lively.

Are we introduced to characters?

  • Two main characters are present in the opening. One character (  Frank Abagnale Jr.) is always seen run away. But he is using different disguises. These being career choices. The seconded actor (Carl Hanratty) is the cop trying to capture Frank Abagnale Jr. but aways just missing. it's hard to get a clear representation of the actor in the opening clip.
