Guns & Sniper Rifles

Below is an assortment of different props that will be using :

Above are Two Guns. On the left is a replica mini AK-47 and the right is a .22 rifle. These Two guns will be used in the opening.

The hand gun above will be painted black to makes it look more realistic to are audience.

Equipment

A Range Rover will be used in the opening scene.

Filming Equipment

We will be using a canon 60D to film the are project we found that in are perliminary task that the quality from a camcorder would get the quality that we need and expected. Therefore we have a DSLr that has the capability to film at 1080i and at 30 frames second.

Future item will be added to this section

Four Lions Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • There are a mixture of shot in the opening sequence
  1. Shot 1 is a homemade face to camera shot. This is similar to what terrorist group do.
  2. Shot 2 is a behind the scene shot. This gives it a homemade feel
  3. Shot 3 is a establishing, this shows you the surrounding area. This shot is shocking because is in the UK not in the middle east.

Editing :

The editing throughout-out is very simple and clean. The continuity of the scene is flawless.

Mise-en-scene :

A replica gun is used. This is funny because the gun is scaled down. Therefore more being in proportion to the actor.

Sound :

There is no non-diegetic sound in the opening. Just to diegetic sound from the actors talking.

Filming Opening Research

Jaws Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • In this clip there are a mixture of shots, from wide angle shots to close-ups.

  1. Shot 1 is a wide angle shot, this help establish how far the girl is out in the water. It also show how empty the sea is.
  2. Shot 2 is a medium to large angle shot , film under water. The subject is moving across frame. This shot creates eerie feel making the audience uncomfortable.
  3. shot 3 is a close-up shot. The camera tracks the subject through the water. The camera slowly gets closer and closer than suddenly changes direction. This shot is a imitation of a shark moving through the water .
  4. Shot 4 is a extreme close-up of the girl being attacked by the shark, The girl is moving violently in the water to try and escape from the shark.

Editing :

  •  The editing throughout-out is very simple and clean. The continuity of the scene is flawless.

 Mise-en-scene :

  • The scene is film at night and you can see the sun set in the background. The lighting is very dark this adds to the tone of the opening scene.

Sound :

  • There is no non-diegetic sound in the opening. Just to diegetic sound for the wave hitting the beach. Before they get in the water you can hear guitar music in the background from the beach party.

Filming Opening Research

Quantum of solace Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • In the opening scene mostly all of the shots are close-up of James Bond's Aston Martin, the chase car and weapons. This creates a action feel to the opening.

  1. In the opening you never see the whole car , only extreme Close-up shots of different parts of the car. You never see the drive but as he is driving a Aston Martin you presume the driver is James Bond.
  2. Shot 2 is a great shot. This is the first time you see what he is running from. This is a great uses of the car.
  3. The reflection shows the position of the car that is shooting . The muzzle flash can be scene in this shoot. This is a different way of shooting this scene. compared to older bond films.

Editing :

  • The editing is very fast, This creates a high pace feel . The use of the surrounding area adds to the opening scene because you don't know the background story. Therefore you are trying to pice together each clip.

 Mise-en-scene :

  • As the gun is introduced the mood changes. This shows how powerful props can be.

Sound :

  • Through-out the opening the music is very sinister and dramatic. But the soundtrack dies down and you only hear the diegetic sound from the cars. This helps you concentrate on the action in the scene.

Filming Opening Research

Snatch Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • The camera used in the opening is a CCTV camera. This gives the impression that something bad is going to happen.
  • The camera pans too the left to reveal a bank of CCTV monitors. These camera track the movement of the jews in the shot.

Editing :

  • The editing is clean, It feels like you are in the room catching the CCTV monitors and not watching a film. This is a great opening effect.
  • i like how when a new character enter the shot the camera pauses and tell you some information about the character. This effect blurs out the rest of the frame as well.
  • During the end of the opening clip the camera tracks the movement of money from frame to frame.

 Mise-en-scene :

  • The uses of props help disguise the character so that they are able to blend in.

Sound :

  • The music is very subdued at the beginning, But as the action starts the music changes in pace.

Filming Opening Research

Catch Me if You Can Opening Title Sequence :

Camera :

  • Due to animation being used in this opening. This creates a very 2 dimensional feel this means  that you get no perception of depth in the frame. This benefits the clip because you can't always keep track of the movement of the Frank Abagnale Jr. which is the main character in the film .
  • There is know variety of shot therefore making the clip there simple, this keeps the audiences attention on the action that is taking place in frame. The movement of Frank Abagnale Jr. which is the main character may often confusion the audience. I think this is trying to be like a game for the audience foreshadowing events later on when Carl Hanratty (the cop) is trying to track down  Frank Abagnale Jr..

Editing :

  • The editing in the opening clip is very clean. This creates a very smart and profession feel just like the characters from the film.
  • When the frame is change the music is linked in to the action in the frame.
  • In the editing there are many frames where only small parts of the frame move. The image below show Frank Abagnale Jr. change careers. This is a brilliant way of portraying this change.

 Mise-en-scene :

  • The props throughout the opening help to show what Job Frank Abagnale Jr. is try to Impersonate.
  • The colour chosen in the opening link back to the time period the film was set in.
  • The opening clip uses bright background colours to contrast the black animated characters.
  • From the picture below you can clear see without the stethoscope you wouldn't be able to get the correct mean from this frame . This is why miss-en-scene is so important in this opening.

Sound :

  • The sound links to the action in the frame. Getting louder when important action is being shown.

Research Feedback

Genre of the clip?

  • The movie is a Biography,Comedy,Crime,Drama hybrid.

How are the audience being drawn in?

  • The audience are drawn in by the suspense not knowing what going to happen next. The music helps due to crescendos marking the an important bit on action.

What is the tone/mood of the clip?

  • The tone and mood of the clip is very up beat and lively.

Are we introduced to characters?

  • Two main characters are present in the opening. One character (  Frank Abagnale Jr.) is always seen run away. But he is using different disguises. These being career choices. The seconded actor (Carl Hanratty) is the cop trying to capture Frank Abagnale Jr. but aways just missing. it's hard to get a clear representation of the actor in the opening clip.

Preliminary Task

Feedback from Preliminary Task :

  • Good range of shots (over the shoulder, feet shot, 2 shot )
  • Continuity was clean from shot to shot , however could be improved (tighter frames)
  • Didn't break the 180 degrees rule
  • Good use of music, to create a relaxed happy vibe.
  • Good match on action with the door
  • Continuity maintained throughout- 180 degrees adhered to
  • think about lighting for the main task
  • later shots need tighter frames
  • Continuity ( maybe more smooth ) in transaction
  • More of a Background story
  • Funny

Key Feedback points :

  1. Many people liked the clean continuity from the open clip but felt the later on frames need to be tighter, especially when the dialogue starts there needs to be a pause from the non diegetic sound playing. Many people pointed out that the music needed to fade out a couple of frames before-hand.
  2. Many of the audience felt that the shot variety was good but there needed to be more light in the frame, I do agree that the shot were dark and the use of studio light may have brighten up the shot when mike was walking through the door.
  3. I feel that the quality of the camera was not to standard . In the main task we will be uses a Canon 6D which is far supreme filming quality compared to the standard definition camcorder that we were using.
  4. People mentioned that there was not real a background story in are preliminary task therefore to structure is better we will need to do a shot-by-shot break down to make sure that this is addressed in are main task.
